During a festive awards show at the sustainable inspiration pavilion of Gastvrij Rotterdam, the Gaia Green Awards 2024 were presented. The awards are presented to the most sustainable restaurants, hotels and MICE venues. Leon Keekstra (Stadsbemoeial Rotterdam) and the Silvie Slachter (Euro-Toques) announced the following winners:
The winners of this ninth edition received a dinner cheque from Euro-Toques and a special award designed by atelier De Wijde Doelen; an art studio where talented artists with mental disabilities work.
Awards were also presented in three subcategories to hospitality businesses that have made an outstanding achievement in sustainable business:
The Plasticfree Award 2024 has gone to Stayokay Dordrecht. This hotel is doing everything possible to eliminate their plastic consumption. They also hold regular clean-up campaigns in the adjacent National Park de Biesbosch.
During the ceremony, an award was also presented to a hospitality venue with a remarkable sustainable Food & Beverage concept. The Falco Eleonora Award 2024 is an initiative of the Amsterdam International Olive Oil Competition and went to d'Ouwe Smisse from Zonnemaire. This beautiful restaurant offers a menu with an abundance of local, organic and homegrown produce.
The audience award went to the finalist with the most audience votes. The 2024 Audience Award went to De Slotplaats from Bakkeveen.
The independent expert jury consists of a group of passionate trade specialists. Jury member Machiel van Dooren (on behalf of Made Blue) says he is proud of the high level of the winners 'We saw some beautiful sustainable gems pass by this year. Fully plant-based menus, new sustainable hotel concepts, venues that have invested a lot in generating their own energy and finalists who are making a considerable commitment to society. The finalists rightly set an example for the rest of the industry'.
Gisela Boersma of The Usual Rotterdam is proud of winning the Gaia Green Award in the hotels category. "We are a new hotel concept where sustainability is completely in our DNA. We launched our first two locations this year and we are going for regenerative greening here; the step beyond sustainability."
The Gaia Green Awards are an initiative of a broad coalition of organisations and parties active in making the hospitality sector more sustainable. The parties carrying the award ceremony organisationally are Green Key, Gastvrij Rotterdam, Worldmeetings.com, Biojournaal, Made Blue, Amsterdam International Olive Oil Competition, hetWerkvan, Euro-Toques Nederland and initiator the Green Leisure Group. Gastvrij Rotterdam, Green Leisure Group and Worldmeetings.com make the pageant possible through an annual sponsorship contribution.
The exceptionally high level and wonderful sustainable examples shown by the finalists provide inspiration for the next edition of the award ceremony. The finalists all set an example for the entire hospitality industry. Catering establishments with ambitions and a story to tell about sustainable business have the opportunity to apply for the tenth edition of the Gaia Green Awards from January 2025.
